Over the last three years, FSC has participated in a series of trials, financed by the European Space Agency, to assess the potential value and utility of satellite remote sensing to strengthen and increase the quality and transparency of the forest certification process.

Having satisfied itself that this technology would be of significant value, FSC has now initiated TransparentForests©, a study to assess the viability of a web-based Forest Certification Information System (FCIS) in delivering an independent source of geo-spatial data to support better forest certification. The FCIS will integrate Earth Observation (EO) satellite mapping systems, global positioning systems (GPS) and global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) in a web-based geographic information system (GIS), specifically customized for the needs of FSC and its stakeholders.

‘The Forest in a Room’ – FSC Italy’s second annual design competition launched

GD_430x225_auto_1366012810_imageOn 25 March 2013 in Milan, FSC Italy officially launched its second annual responsible design competition ‘The Forest in a Room’.

The theme of this year’s competition is domestic sociality. It aims to investigate the social and symbolic dimensions of aggregation in the domestic setting. Participants are invited to design chairs, tables, coffee tables, lighting systems or furnishing, created to facilitate moments of sharing and socializing together in our houses. The purpose of the competition is to encourage young designers to design and produce FSC certified wooden objects, drawing the attention of designers, industrial producers and consumers to the origin of raw wood.

The competition is open to two categories: professionals (up to 40 years old) and students. All nationalities are invited to participate, and the deadline for submitting the projects is 25 June 2013. The winners will have the opportunity to see a prototype of their project realized. The top three projects in each category will also be shown at an awards ceremony, to be held on 27 September 2013, where prizes will be presented to the winners.
